Joel B. Payne

Although born and raised in the United States, Joel B. Payne has spent his professional career in Europe, first in France and later in Germany.

Thrice named Germany’s best sommelier, he later managed the venerable importing company Segnitz before establishing himself as a consultant and later wine writer.

He now pens articles for many of the world's leading magazines and for the last fifteen years has published annually the German Wine Guide, considered the standard work. Now the chief editor of Meininger's Wine Business International, he is also a permanent member of the Grand Jury Européen and president of the International Circle of Wine Writers (FIJEV).

His lasting attachment to Syrah began in 1978 when he first did the harvest in Côte-Rôtie with Marcel Guigal, an annual pilgrimage that continued until 1985.

Polyglote (English, German, French and Spanish) and fine expert of the wines on a worldwide scale, Joel Payne will animate the debate of International Syrah Symposium 13 and 14 mai 2008.

Organised by Forum Œnologie and ISARA-Lyon, along with main sponsors Inter Rhône and the Revue des Œnologues, ISS will be held in the heart of Lyon's biotech hub.
